No. 2820, Sepoy Newla, H. Co., 38tli Native Infantry ; caste Jat ; a native of Muttra ; height 5 feet 7\ inches ; circumference of chest 35^ inches ; age 21 ; service years ; of good muscular development; was brought to the regimental hospital about 10 a. m. on the ifith October. This sepoy had hitherto enjoyed good health. Ou examination it was found that he was in a helpless condition, being completely paralysed in the upper and lower extremities. He was then quite conscious, answered intelligently, but was rather reticent as to how the paralysis occurred. His temperature was 1)8* 4? ; pulse weak and slow ; breathing unaffected, and pupils unaltered. It was casually stated by his comrades that, when wrestling with another sepoy in the " aJikam" or gymnasium that morning, he suddenly became powerless, "Ideh&r." When under examination he did not complain of any particular pain on the spine, being lightly percussed in the cervical region, but on turning him round very slowly and carefully, on his bed, he winced as if suffering much distress. No line of deformity was observed over the spinous processes. Treatment at this time consisted of 2 grains of calomel and perfect rest in bed. About 1 A. M. on the 17th October, 15 hours after the accident, his breathing became stertorous, and he died suddenly at 1-30 A.M. The immediate cause of death appears to have
